Social Role Theory

All the gender perceptions are determined by the society. Society tries to imbue people with role patterns which teach them how to act properly. “Baby girls wear pink, boys wear blue” is one of the most known expositions. Men are expected to be the head of the family, be the financier of his family’s all needs, unemotional and analytical. Women are considered firstly as mothers, they are expected to give childcare and be able to deal with house affairs; they are more sensitive and less analytical then men.

As the consequences of the social gender roles, women cannot improve themselves by the way they wanted. Moreover, even if they join working class, house keeping and child caring is still their primary job to do; they have to work much more then men to be as successful as men. Even in the most civilized countries, the inequality between genders can be easily seen.

Gender HCI

Gender HCI is one of the subtopics of HCI. As a field it is deeply researched in 2004 by Laura Beckwith (a PhD candidate at Oregon State University) who also named the term. Gender HCI basically examines how the differences between genders reflect in software or hardware interactions. Since it is a subcategory of HCI, Gender HCI is highly related to all the fields which are related to HCI itself. Gender HCI is a new field and its formation is not over yet.

What is HCI

Human computer interaction (HCI) examines the relationship between humans and computers. It is located in a trans disciplinary area which means that HCI is highly effected by such fields as design disciplines, linguistics, social sciences, cognitive psychology, sociology, human-factors engineering. HCI basically is developed in order to improve user oriented interfaces instead of designer oriented interfaces. The works on HCI include features of humans that effect usage of the technology and how people gain the capabilities in using this technology. The needs of people try to be matched with technical abilities with HCI; moreover HCı helps to explain how the new technology interact with the organizations.
