Why is interface design important for user?

Men and women interact differently with computers. The most well known difference is about the graphic designs. For sure, their approaches towards web applications and usage of them differ. These differences create distinctness on their performance of works on user interface displays. Other distinction comes with the emergence of new features of internet design and their wish to use these features or adaptation time on these features.  Understanding gender differences can bring benefits to the web site designers. For instance, automotive and wedding dress sites should show high differences regarding to their designs because one is at male dominated area and the other is at the female dominated area. Besides, understanding the requirements of genders improves the gender-concentrated usability of an interface design.

Gender HCI

Gender HCI is one of the subtopics of HCI. As a field it is deeply researched in 2004 by Laura Beckwith (a PhD candidate at Oregon State University) who also named the term. Gender HCI basically examines how the differences between genders reflect in software or hardware interactions. Since it is a subcategory of HCI, Gender HCI is highly related to all the fields which are related to HCI itself. Gender HCI is a new field and its formation is not over yet.

What is HCI

Human computer interaction (HCI) examines the relationship between humans and computers. It is located in a trans disciplinary area which means that HCI is highly effected by such fields as design disciplines, linguistics, social sciences, cognitive psychology, sociology, human-factors engineering. HCI basically is developed in order to improve user oriented interfaces instead of designer oriented interfaces. The works on HCI include features of humans that effect usage of the technology and how people gain the capabilities in using this technology. The needs of people try to be matched with technical abilities with HCI; moreover HCı helps to explain how the new technology interact with the organizations.

Getting Started

As a New Media and Society student, my main aim is to examine Human-computer Interaction (HCI) with respect to gender issues. I tried to touch on the differences between genders in Web usage or HCI content with attempting to avoid generalizations. Receiving help of the statistics, I worked on facing common beliefs out. I hope some of the statements on this blog may help to realize readers that the demographic gap is getting shorter day by day with the developments in digital age. The ultimate human dimension of HCI takes its place within the notions of Web 2.0 environment.
